Pay-As-Needed Special Bulk Refuse Collection
The Department of Public Works provides Pay-As-Needed Special Bulk Refuse collection for all residents of the city. This service is in addition to the Monthly Bulk Refuse collection that is offered, free of charge, only to residents who are currently Weekly Refuse Collection customers. This Pay-As-Needed service is not offered to commercial establishments within the city.
Please read and follow the guidelines provided:
Residents should contact the Customer Service Division of Public Works (formerly Billing Utilities) to order a Pay-As-Needed Special Bulk Refuse Collection by calling 540-942-6643 or by visiting their office at 503 West Main Street, Room 103-A in the Charles T. Yancey Municipal Building;
Scheduling dates for collection will be coordinated between the Customer Service Division and the Solid Waste Management Division to meet the customer’s needs whenever possible;
Delays in our ability to schedule special pick ups can be expected in times of heavier than normal workloads in the Spring when our regular customers are engaged in “spring cleaning” around the city;
Collection items picked up by the Knuckleboom truck must be stacked by the resident on the curb near the street in front of the residence or along the alley in back;
The Knuckleboom truck will not enter any grassy area of the yard to pick up materials as this truck is extremely heavy and may cause damage to private property;
Movement of pick up items to the designated collection location is solely the responsibility of the customer;
No demolition or construction debris, hazardous materials, car parts or appliances will be collected;
A flat rate pick up fee of $35 is charged covering the cost of fuel, manpower, and other overhead fees associated with use of the Knuckleboom truck. Pickups that exceed one truck load will be billed an additional fee of $35 per return trip to the customer’s residence.
