Downtown Waynesboro
Downtown Waynesboro is a Virginia Mainstreet community and Virginia historic district. Our pedestrian-friendly environment is home to businesses like specialty and service providers, museums, arts and cultural centers, unique restaurants and lodging opportunities. The South River runs through our downtown, one of only two urban fisheries in the State.

 The Waynesboro Heritage Museum is located in downtown at the corner of Main Street & Wayne Avenue. The museum has a wonderful collection of pictures, photographs, antiques, collectibles, a world-class doll collection and a Valley Native American artifacts collection. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 9:00am until 5:00pm, or for large group tours by appointment.  Tour the streets that now cover the grounds of the Battle of Waynesboro. Stop at the Plumb House Museum, which was between the battle lines, and pick up a map and the story of the battle. The map features the battlefield location of various military units involved. The Wildlife Center of Virginia is an internationally acclaimed teaching and research hospital for wildlife and conservation medicine located in Waynesboro. Since its founding in 1982, the Center has treated more than 50,000 wild animals from every corner of Virginia.
The Center has presented compelling, life-changing environmental education programs to more than 1.4 million children and adults and has helped train a generation of wildlife veterinarians around the world. In 2007, the Wildlife Center received the prestigious National Conservation Achievement Award from the National Wildlife Federation – the “Academy Award” in the field of conservation. PLEASE NOTE: As a hospital and emergency room, the Wildlife Center is not open to the public. The Center does schedule special open-house tours, generally on Sunday afternoons in the spring and fall.
