Contractors doing work over $1,000 in Virginia are required to hold a Virginia State Contractor's License.
License Classifications
The three classifications of licenses are as follows:
- Class C - the total value referred to in a single contract or project is over $1,000 but less than $10,000.
- Class B - the total value referred to in a single contract or project is $10,000 but less than $120,000.
- Class A - the total value referred to in a single contract or project is $120,000 or more.
Trades
The
Board for Contractors regulates individual tradesmen who engage in the trades of:
- Backflow prevention
- Building energy analysis
- Electrical
- Elevator mechanics

- Gas fitting
- Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
- Plumbing
- Water well construction

Although the term "certified" is used, state certification of these trades is mandatory, not optional.
Individual tradesmen may also be subject to local ordinances, laws, or other requirements imposed by other state agencies, courts, or certain localities. Questions about local ordinances should be directed to the community in which the individual plans to engage in their trade.
