Valley VITA

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
CAPSAW sponsored Valley Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) through its third season of operation for the 2012 filing season. Hours were expanded and economic education and benefit screening services were added at both of the existing sites. Plans for the 2013 filing season include two new locations and the addition of Individual Development Account opportunities. Highlights for the 2012 season include:
  • More than 250 federal and state tax returns filed with clients obtaining more than $400,000 in refunds to supplement their annual wages
  • Average refund of $1,360 for clients with an average income of $17,200 a year
  • Over $50,000 saved by taxpayers not using paid preparers with clients able to keep 100% of their refunds (approximate savings of $200 a return)
  • Recruited and trained 25 volunteers who provided nearly 700 hours of service to prepare returns. The Virginia Office on Volunteerism and Community Services estimates the value of volunteer time at $24.64 an hour, which equates to a value of over $17,000
Compared to 2011 tax year this represents:
  • 75% increase in the number of returns filed
  • 80% increase in the amount of federal refunds
  • 73% increase in the amount of state refunds
  • 77% increase in the funds saved by not using a paid preparer
